FAQs

Do ESAs need to be obtained from a licensed mental health professional?

Yes — Clinical documentation must come from a licensed provider.

Is this only for housing, or for air travel too?

ESA letters primarily apply to housing accommodations under the Fair Housing Act. Airline policies vary and many no longer recognize ESAs in the same way, so we can discuss your specific situation during the consult.

Do I have to meet with you even if I’ve had an ESA before?

Yes — I connect briefly with every client as part of an ethical assessment process.

I'm moving to Wisconsin from another state. Can you still write me a letter?

Yes. However, I am only currently licensed in Wisconsin and Florida, so I cannot conduct the assessment or consult unless you are presently in one of those states. Please contact me via the form on this page to troubleshoot options.

Emotional Support Animal Assessment Certification

I provide Emotional Support Animal (ESA) Assessments in Wisconsin to help determine whether you meet the legal and clinical criteria for an ESA accommodation letter.

This process is about understanding what you’re navigating and whether an Emotional Support Animal is a meaningful part of your mental health support system.

If the criteria are met, I can provide a legally valid ESA letter that complies with Wisconsin and federal housing regulations.

If you’re curious whether an ESA is right for you or have other questions, please contact me via the form on this page.

A Personal Note

My own pups have been deeply supportive in my life. They’re sometimes with me and my clients during sessions. There’s something profoundly regulating about living with them. Animals don’t fix everything, of course, but they can help us feel a little more anchored and connected when life is heavy or dysregulating, or you’re navigating a significant life change or event.

That’s part of why I offer a specific service for ESAs. When it’s thoughtfully assessed and ethically supported, an ESA becomes a meaningful emotional and sometimes physical accommodation.

ESA Assessment Requirements in WI

In Wisconsin, an Emotional Support Animal assessment must demonstrate two things:

  • A qualifying mental or emotional health condition that rises to the level of a disability
  • A disability-related need for the animal as a supportive accommodation

Finally, the appropriate documentation must come from a licensed mental health professional.

Note: If you are currently living outside the state of Wisconsin but anticipate moving here with an ESA pet, please contact me via the form on this page. Due to licensing requirements, I cannot provide virtual assessments unless you are currently in Wisconsin.

What to Expect from the ESA Certification Assessment

Step 1: Complete the Online Assessment

You begin by completing the ESA assessment online, on your own time. However, if you prefer to schedule a live or in-person assessment, you can fill in the form to the left.

  • Takes about 10-15 minutes
  • No prior therapy relationship required
  • Secure and confidential

Step 2: Schedule a Brief Consultation

After you submit your assessment, I’ll reach out to you to schedule a brief consultation call.

During this consult (about 15–20 minutes securely via Zoom), we’ll connect human-to-human so I can:

  • Clarify any questions
  • Better understand your current circumstances
  • Ensure the letter is clinically and ethically appropriate

Sometimes, additional supportive tools or resources may also be helpful alongside the ESA letter — grounding practices, nervous system support, or other tailored recommendations, depending on what you’re navigating.

This consultation is required and is included in the assessment fee.

Step 3: ESA Letter

If you meet the qualifications and an ESA is clinically indicated, I will provide your personalized ESA recommendation letter after our consult.

Costs

Online Assessment + Consult: $130
Letter: $50

Closing Invite

If you’re wondering whether an Emotional Support Animal might be part of your support system, I’d be happy to walk through the process with you. More than anything, I care about making this feel grounded, supportive, and genuinely human.

You can begin by submitting your ESA assessment here.

Sarayu was upfront that not everyone receives an ESA letter, which helped me trust that she takes the process seriously. She listened with kindness and compassion, and the process was smooth, prompt, and faster than I expected.

TM

I was nervous at first, but Sarayu was easy to talk to. It wasn’t just a conversation about ensuring my dog could live with me; she also cared about where I was in my life. She also helped me understand what I’m legally required to disclose, and what I get to keep private.

JL

I’d recently lost my dog to cancer, and in addition to the letter, Sarayu offered journaling prompts and exercises to help me grieve and also welcome my new puppy. If you’re not sure about going through this process, having your animals with you isn’t asking too much. It’s really about trusting yourself to ask for what you need.
